Randy Morris is a candidate for mayor of Athens, Ohio. Service to the
community is a natural extension of Randy’s life-long dedication to
social responsibility. He served for nearly thirty years in the US Air
Force, retiring in 2005 in the rank of Colonel. He was a command pilot
and has over four-thousand hours in the C-5 and T-38.

While Randy's views on governance and public service have been
influenced by his military travels, he is proud to be an Ohio native. He
grew up seventy-five miles north of Athens in the small town of
Reynoldsburg where he met his wife of thirty-eight years, Shawn. While
serving as Professor of Aerospace Studies at Ohio University (1994-
97), Randy and Shawn purchased their home on South May Avenue.
The couple's three daughters, now all adults, have strong ties to the
area as well. Two attended Athens public schools (one graduated from
Athens High School in 1997) and the other earned her bachelor’s and
master’s degrees from OU. One daughter lives with her husband and
son in Athens.
Randy is currently the Director of Member Services for the National Business Incubation Association, working with the
association’s member professionals who use entrepreneurship and innovation to create jobs and wealth in
communities around the world. He is responsible for all member recruiting and retention efforts and has held this
position since March of 2006. Randy is a devoted fan of OU athletics, and enjoys riding his bike on the Hocking
Adena Bikeway.

Randy's background of leadership, problem solving and management in large organizations will provide a new, much
needed perspective to Athens governance.

Issues page on this site.

•  Work to create jobs in the city by reversing the perception communicated by current elected officials that Athens is
anti-business. Under his leadership the administration will, of course, abide by all ordinances passed by city council, but
will work to be a positive partner (rather than putting up road blocks) with business owners to meet the city’s
requirements successfully so jobs are created. Job creation should be a high priority of the mayor.
•  Respect the rule of law, including respecting
property rights (for everyone, not just those favored by current elected
officials).
•  Work to establish a
building inspector capability for Athens to increase the safety and compliance of construction
projects (Athens is the largest city in Ohio without the capability for building inspections).
•  Open Bobcat Lane to Richland Avenue to
enhance safety, reduce gas consumption and to improve the city’s
relationship with Ohio University.
•  Lead an effort to eliminate the “us vs. them” rift between
Athens’ university students and long-term residents. The city’s
current elected officials, in an effort to avoid offending anyone by implying that some individuals display bad behavior,
end up communicating that the problem is “the students.” Randy believes that the vast majority of students, like the vast
majority of long-term residents, are honest, law abiding people who respect the property and rights of others. He will
focus on those individuals, long-term or students, who violate the law and attempt to end the characterization that
“students” are the problem.

The City of Athens has many Democratic voters.  Randy knows that the "R" by his name may give some of these voters
pause on election day.  That said, he truly believes that when it comes to matters of the city we all share, there is more
that unites us than divides us.  For more in his own words, click on the video below.
Randy's experience and qualifications for the position of Mayor of Athens differ greatly from the incumbent challenger.
Randy believes that this race is more than just a contest, but an extended job interview where you, the citizen, is tasked
with making the hiring decisions.  Therefore, he would like to express how his experience in public service qualifies him
for the job he's applying for.  For more about this, please click on the video below.
